The idea
Pick the apartment you lived in when you had nothing. Push the couch to the wall it used to be on, drag out the folding table or the milk crate you actually used, and order from the place you called every Friday. Put on whatever was always in the background back then. Let them walk into it with no explanation.
This works because it is not a set from a movie, it is a set from their life. The details do the arguing for you. When they spot the lamp with the bent shade or the same dumpling order on the counter, they are already halfway to knowing why.
The trap is going too big. Dress the whole apartment and it stops feeling like a memory and starts feeling like a party. Three or four right details beat twenty close ones, so pick the objects they have mentioned out loud.
What to say
“We had one chair and that awful lamp and I was happier in that apartment than I understood at the time. I keep picturing you on the floor with a paper plate, laughing at something I said. That's the part I want to keep. Will you marry me?”
Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

- 1Write down five things you both remember about that first place.
- 2Track down the two or three you can actually get, and thrift the rest.
- 3Start moving furniture two hours before they get home. Ask a friend to text you when they leave work, or pick a night they are somewhere with a hard end time, so you are not dragging a couch when the door opens.
- 4Pick the takeout up yourself and leave it boxed on the counter, or place the delivery order when you hear the car.
- 5Sit on the floor where you used to sit and wait for the door.
- 6Ask after the food is open, not before.
