The idea

Your finger leaves oil on glass. Write on the dry mirror the night before, wipe nothing, and the letters stay invisible until the room fills with steam. They step out of the shower on a normal Tuesday and the question is sitting there in their own bathroom. Be standing in the hallway when the door opens.

It uses a room they are in alone every single day, so there is no audience and no performance. The reveal is slow. The letters come up a stroke at a time as the glass fogs, which gives them a few seconds to understand what they are looking at before they turn around.

Fingerprint writing disappears if someone wipes the mirror or runs the fan. Test it two nights early on a window so you know how hard to press, and leave the exhaust fan off that morning. Keep it to four or five words, because long sentences come up smeared. If it fogs up early or comes back smeared, wipe the mirror clean, write it again that night, and go again the next morning.

What to say

β€œI wrote that last night and then I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking about you standing right there in a towel reading it, and that's the most us thing I could come up with. I want a hundred more boring mornings in this exact bathroom with you. Will you marry me?”

Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

Step by step

  1. 1Test the trick two nights early on a window or a spare mirror.
  2. 2Wait until the mirror is bone dry, then write the question with one fingertip.
  3. 3Leave the bathroom alone. No wiping, no cleaning spray, no fan.
  4. 4Do not shower in that bathroom between writing it and their shower. Use the other bathroom or shower at the gym, and keep anyone else in the house out of it too.
  5. 5Get up before they do, get dressed, and stay nearby.
  6. 6Stand in the hall while the shower runs so you hear the door open.
  7. 7Keep whatever you are giving them in your pocket, not on the counter.

Plan the rest of it

Full Blueprint

The idea above is the shape of the day. The Blueprint is the rest of it, built around your person and the place you picked.

  • A run of show with real times, from the morning until the toast
  • The speech, written in your words, with the part to memorize marked
  • A shot list for whoever is filming, so they know where to stand
  • A supplies checklist with what to buy and when to buy it
  • A rain plan, because outdoor asks lose to weather more than anything else
