The idea
You kept the cards. Dig out all of them, put them in order by year, and on Valentine's night sit across from them and read them out loud from the first one to the newest. Their handwriting, their jokes, the things they meant that year. Then you put the stack down and ask.
A new card cannot do this. What they hear is a record of themselves getting more sure of you, year over year, in their own words. By the third or fourth one they usually are not looking at the cards anymore.
If you did not keep them, do not fake it and do not buy a stand-in. Scroll back to the oldest messages you still have and read those in order instead. The chronology is the thing that works, not the paper.
What to say
“That last one is from three years ago and I've read it more times than I want to admit. I don't have anything to add to what you already wrote in there. I just want to ask you the one thing none of them say. Will you marry me?”
Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

Step by step
- 1Dig out every card they have ever given you. Check drawers, books, the box in the closet.
- 2Put them in order by year and stick a note on each one with the year so you don't fumble.
- 3Read the whole stack silently once, alone, so you don't fall apart on the first one.
- 4On Valentine's night, clear the table and sit across from them instead of beside them.
- 5Read them out loud, oldest first, all the way to the newest.
- 6Put the stack face down and ask.
