The idea
Everyone in that room is waiting for midnight. You are not. At 11:57 you take their hand, walk them ten steps out of the crush to a corner you picked two hours earlier, and ask while the countdown is still running. They answer, and then the whole place goes off around you.
The midnight kiss is shared. Every couple standing there gets one. The minute before it belongs to nobody, which is exactly why you can take it. It also means you are not competing with fireworks and two hundred phones in the air for their attention.
The crowd is what ruins this. Walk the space before 11:00 and pick your corner while you can still move, because at 11:50 you will not be able to cross the floor. Pick one inside the same room, not through a door, because most ticketed parties and city squares will not let you back in once you step out. Keep the box in a zipped inside pocket, not a bag or a coat someone can knock into.
What to say
“I've got about sixty seconds before this whole place loses its mind. I didn't want to ask you in front of a crowd and I didn't want to wait until next year. Will you marry me?”
Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

- 1Pick a spot with a countdown you can hear, a rooftop, a town square, a friend's balcony over the street.

- 3Walk the space before 11:00 and find a corner ten steps out of the crush, inside, with no door between you and the room.

- 5At 11:57, say you want to show them something and walk them to your corner.
- 6Ask at 11:58 so you both get a full minute before the noise starts.
- 7Go back in for midnight, and save the bottle for the car or the kitchen counter at home.
