The idea
Christmas morning goes around the room and not one thing under the tree is from you. They will notice by about the third gift and they will work hard not to show it. When the paper is all over the floor and everybody is done, you say you did get them something and you go get it.
The letdown is the entire trick. For twenty minutes they have been quietly building a small story about a partner who forgot, and then the story breaks in front of the whole room. That gap is what makes it land harder than the biggest box under there ever could have.
Do not stretch it. Fifteen or twenty minutes is the whole window, and past that it stops being a bit and starts being a real hurt they remember. Watch their face, and if it goes flat or they say something out loud, end it right then. Tell one person in the house ahead of time so nobody covers for you by telling them you had a rough month.
What to say
“I know it looked like I forgot. I've been sitting on this since October and I almost gave it to you three times already. I wanted it to be the last thing this morning instead of the first. Will you marry me?”
Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

Step by step
- 1Put nothing under the tree with their name on it. Not one thing, not a stocking.
- 2Tell one person in the house what you are doing so nobody tries to smooth it over.
- 3Set the phone stand up the night before, somewhere with a view of the tree, so nobody watches you place it in the morning.
- 4Let the morning run all the way out until the last gift is opened.
- 5Watch their face the whole time. If it goes flat early, stop and go get it.
- 6Say you left one in the car, hit record on your way out of the room, then come back with the box.
- 7Ask right there on the floor with the paper everywhere.
