The idea
There is a thing they bring up twice a year and never do. The pottery class, the sunrise fishing trip, the town two hours away they read about years ago. You book it, pay for it, and say nothing. The morning of, you hand them coffee and tell them to get in the car.
This is not a memory, it is the thing they gave up on. All day they are inside a plan they never believed anyone was going to actually make. By the time you ask at the end of it, they have spent eight hours being taken seriously, which is most of the answer already.
Pick a day you both already have off, a long weekend Monday, the Friday after Thanksgiving, the flat week between Christmas and New Year's. Then confirm the place is open that day, because half the places worth driving to close for the holiday. Do not tell them the night before, since one evening of notice turns it into a plan they will start managing.
What to say
“You've been talking about this since the second year we were together and I got tired of hearing you say someday. I'd rather be the person who books it than the person who agrees it sounds nice. That's the whole reason I'm asking you here and not at home. Will you marry me?”
Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.

Step by step
- 1Write down the thing they have said out loud more than twice and never done.
- 2Book it three or four weeks out on a day you both already have off, and confirm the place is open on a holiday.
- 3Clear their calendar quietly. Ask their boss or their sibling if you have to, and say nothing about why.
- 4Pack a bag for them the night before, boots, a jacket, whatever the thing needs, and leave it by the door.
- 5Tell them the morning of, over coffee, and give them twenty minutes to get in the car.
- 6Do the whole day without explaining yourself. Let it just be the day they wanted.
- 7Ask at the end, standing wherever the day ends, before you drive home.
