The idea
There is one thing they do alone before the rest of the world is up. The four mile loop, the dog's first walk, the drive out to open the shop. The night before, ask if you can come. Get up at their hour, let them lead, and ask at the spot on the route they have told you about before, the bench or the top of the hill.
That hour is the one part of their week nobody else is in, and being let into it is most of the gift. You are not importing them into a scene you built, you are showing up inside something that already belongs to them. It also buys you thirty quiet minutes to settle down before you have to say a word.
The way to wreck it is to turn it into an outing. No pastry stop, no detour to somewhere prettier, no asking them to take the long way. If they run and you cannot run four miles, say so the night before and walk it or ride a bike alongside instead, because gasping the question out is worse than any weather.

Say it slower than feels natural. The pause after it is the whole moment, so let it sit there.
